Whether you are a tourist, business owner or employee, a resident, a property owner, a visitor or an elected official, we all hope to live and enjoy a clean trash free environment. Today, visitors to Reno traveling Highway 395 from Moana Lane to Cold Springs are greeted by disgusting amounts of litter and debris. No meaningful clean up of this stretch of Highway 395 has occurred in over five years and the problem is compounding daily. This segment of highway are not suitable for volunteers because of traffic volume, shoulder size, visibility, terrain, side banks, access, frequency of pick-ups, or other safety reasons.

We are writing to request your assistance in assuring the clean up of the Highway 395 gateway to the City of Reno and Sparks. Please contact the Nevada Department of Transportation to request immediate action is taken to assure a much needed litter removal on Highway 395 from Moana Lane north to Cold Springs. Contact:

Keep America Beautiful has determined that people litter because:

Litter already has accumulated.

They believe someone else—a park maintenance or highway worker— will pick up after them.

· They feel no sense of ownership, even though areas such as parks and beaches are public property.

No matter where litter starts, it moves, from streets and highways to parks and waterways. Wind and weather moves litter around a community, into the gutters, planted gardens, alleyways and parking areas. The wind on Highway 395 now blows trash and debris across the highway causing potentially serious road hazards. There is clearly a need for consistent, effective law and ordinance enforcement laws which impact solid waste & litter management on Highway 395.

We believe these photos present a clear picture of the immediate need for action. Please feel free to contact us at 972-6670 if you have any further questions. We look forward to hearing from you and appreciate your prompt attention to this matter.

Sincerely,
